What prompted you to open a store of your own?

When our daughter was born, it was important that I had the time and flexibility to balance both home and work. You can’t always have that in Corporate America. I wanted to use the buying background and international experience acquired over the years and apply it on a much smaller scale. I especially enjoy talking and working with people and being part of the community.

Describe your typical customer.

Our typical customer is mostly female, 30 & up, and is typically, a homeowner. Sometimes she just moved into the area and wants to fully decorate or just spruce up the house. Many times she is looking for gifts that are special and unique but priced reasonably well. We occasionally have the bride to be who finds her bridesmaids gifts customized to her liking.

What sets you apart from other “gift shops”?

What sets us apart is our friendly customer service and strive for excellence. Arlette’s Place is an upscale shop without the upscale prices. We offer embroidery services on most of our products and offer complimentary beautiful chocolate crafted boxes and ribbon with purchase. We want our customers to come to Arlette’s Place to find that unique gift for that special someone and be happy with their experience.

What advice would you give to someonee who is thinking of opening a retail shop?

Always keep in mind that it’s a “people” business, not a product business. 10% of it is having the right product, but 90% of it is about people and having the right positive attitude. Even though you are selling items, you must manage it in a way that you always keep the customer in mind- both internal customers (employees) and external (customers).
