Successful entrepreneurs mentor new business owners in 5K at UNF

The 1st Annual River City Mentor Walk was held at the University of North Florida campus on April 27.  During the River City Mentor Walk early-stage small business owners were matched with seasoned entrepreneurs who acted as mentors while they walked the three-mile trek around the UNF campus. Pairs discussed business challenges and ideas for entrepreneurial success.

Twenty-two early stage entrepreneurs were matched with mentors in similar industries who have successfully built companies or had expertise in solving some of the challenges faced by new business owners.  The result was an instant rapport for the pairs participating in the 5K.
“We were thrilled by how quickly the pairs began their conversations and the candid advice exchanged by the participants,” said Jared Bailey, River City Mentor Walk Chairperson.  “Our hope is that a lasting mentoring relationship will result from the experience.”

Tameka Montgomery, Associate Administrator for Economic Development for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in Washington DC, participated in the event by giving opening remarks to the crowd of seventy people.

At the conclusion of the River City Mentor Walk, participants continued networking and exchanged contact information to further their conversations.  Additionally, an online group forum was established to strengthen the connections made during the event and to encourage future conversations.
This event was presented by the Small Business Development Center at UNF, the Small Business Resource Network and Advantage Business Magazine.
