From start to finish, working with Mark Yarick at the FSBDC at UNF was an awesome experience.  Overall, I think the SBDC is a fantastic bridge between individuals and lenders, and anyone seeking out an SBA loan would be crazy not to take advantage of this free service.

When Florida’s law changed in 2020 and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) could have their own practice without an over-seeing physician, this gave Kristin Kay, APRN and her husband Steven the opportunity to start their own practice.  Kristin had already built a loyal customer following while working for a primary care office in Lake City and for other physicians and hospitals in the North Florida area.

The first step was to purchase a building, and this is when the bank suggested going to the Florida SBDC (FSBDC) at UNF for assistance on a business plan.  Mark Yarick, FSBDC at UNF Business Consultant, helped the Kay’s with their business plan, which lead to assistance with financial projections to apply for an SBA loan.

“Going into the process of getting an SBA loan, I was very stressed about creating a business plan.   Just the thought of putting pen to paper and starting it was overwhelming.   I knew I was capable of creating it, but I felt overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start.  Sitting down with Mark and talking about everything was extremely beneficial as it allowed me to focus on the subjects that he knew were of most importance to lenders.” says Kristin.

With Steven’s experience from running his family restaurant in Orlando and Mark’s financial projections, the couple were able to close on the SBA loan.

Ally Family Medicine is currently in the middle of renovating their new office building.  While renovations are taking place, they are in a temporary office.  Kristin works tirelessly to be accessible to her patients.  She has also found ways to increase revenue through tele-health and other non-traditional methods. With continued guidance from the Florida SBDC at UNF, Ally Family Medicine is on the road to becoming a successful practice.

“From start to finish, working with Mark Yarick at the FSBDC at UNF was an awesome experience.  I can tell Mark genuinely cares about his clients and their futures.  Overall, I think the SBDC is a fantastic bridge between individuals and lenders, and anyone seeking out an SBA loan would be crazy not to take advantage of this free service.” says Kristin.
