Dimensions in Tile

Every small business owner needs to take advantage of the services offered by the SBDC.  This is a resource that can help in so many ways.

Prior to starting Dimensions in Tile, Brian Perry and his business partner, John, both worked in the tile industry.  Brian worked for John as a sales representative at the same company.  When it was purchased by a larger company, the direction of the company changed.  This prompted Brian and John to leave and start their own business where they could control internal business decisions.   In 2003, they opened the doors to Dimensions in Tile in Jacksonville.

They started the company as a tile and stone distributor.  Quickly, they added new avenues of service to the company’s offerings.  The company sells and installs tile, wood, and carpet.  Brian and John realized builders and homeowners were looking for more of a one-stop-shop in flooring.  “We are a flooring company ‘on steroids’ because we are a distributor (importing direct), provide installation and offer custom design assistances,” said Brian.  The company has seven employees with a 5,000 square foot showroom and 25,000 square foot warehouse.

At the end of 2018, John decided he would like to retire so Brian started the process of buying John’s ownership position.  Brian’s father suggested that he contact the Florida SBDC at UNF. Brian met with business consultant Cathy Hagan multiple times where she provided him with information to help make strategic business decisions. She prepared a preliminary business valuation to help Brian determine a potential offer to John for the buyout.  Once the purchase price and terms were agreed upon, Cathy guided Brian through the SBA loan process and used the Small Business Resource Network to help him find a banker to fund the purchase.  Ultimately, Jeannine Balanky of American Momentum Bank provided the financing and Brian took over 100% ownership of Dimensions in Tile in February 2019.

“Working with the SBDC was extremely helpful with this transition,” says Brian. “It has been a pleasure working with Cathy.  Every small business owner needs to take advantage of the services offered by the SBDC.  This is a resource that can help in so many ways.  It helps to have an outside, seasoned source like Cathy to bounce off new ideas.”
