Success Story

Environmental Remediation Services, Inc. (ERS)

I am still amazed by my experience with the FSBDC at UNF. I was seeking guidance on how to obtain SBA funding to buy out my employer, but I got so much more,” said John. “Ms. Cathy Hagan and Ms. Marge Cirillo are professional, phenomenal, experienced gurus. They worked with me in my passionate pursuit of entrepreneurship. Anyone serious about becoming an entrepreneur should put visiting the SBDC on the top of their To-Do list.

John Anderson first visited the FSBDC at UNF in October 2012. He met with FSBDC Consultant Cathy Hagan to discuss the potential purchase of the company where he was currently employed. John has worked for Environmental Remediation Services (ERS) for 19 of the company’s 25-year history. The owner of ERS had been grooming him for this transition. It was a natural fit.

John needed financing to purchase the business, so he met Cathy Hagan to work on developing a business plan to submit to a lender. With his intimate knowledge of the business, coupled with Cathy’s expertise in business planning, the narrative of the plan came together nicely. The next step was to prepare financial projections. Cathy provided John with a financial template and worked with him to develop projections with clearly stated assumptions.

It took some time for John and the current owners to come to an agreement on the transfer of ownership. He reached out to Cathy periodically to ask questions and keep her updated on the progress. Once they structured a deal that was agreed on by all parties, John returned to the FSBDC to help turn the business plan into a loan package. Cathy and fellow FSBDC consultant Marge Cirillo worked with John to put together all the required documents. Through the Small Business Resource Network, they referred him to several banks. Ultimately, the SBA loan was approved by Ameris Bank. The closing took place in February 2015, and John is pleased to be 100% owner of ERS.

John plans to continue his relationship with the FSBDC at UNF. He recently returned to meet with Cathy and Marge to review the company’s progress since he took ownership. And he met with FSBDC Government Contracting Specialist Don Zavesky to get assistance with his application for 8(a) certification.
