We originally contacted the Florida SBDC at UNF before we started our business to work on our business concept. They were able to get us in the mindset of being business owners, and they opened our eyes to all that is involved in owning and running your own business.

Guanabana Artisan Ice Pops is a small business in Jacksonville that serves up fresh fruit popsicles and plenty of smiles. In the summer of 2014, husband and wife team Oliver and Julieta Mosqueda started Guanabana with the idea to create an all-natural frozen treat that is both delicious and nutritious. With hard work and a great deal of trial-and-error, Oliver and Julieta were able to build a thriving business upon this vision, and they now produce and sell all-natural ice pops made from fresh fruits and vegetables. What started as an ice-pop tricycle has grown into a vibrant business model. The Mosqueda’s have since expanded into a healthy dessert truck that is consistently in high demand. They even expanded into the wholesale market, with product placements in several grocery stores.

Throughout the company’s start-up and growth, Guanabana has engaged the assistance of the Florida Small Business Development Center at UNF (Florida SBDC at UNF).

“We originally contacted the Florida SBDC at UNF before we started our business to work on our business concept. They were able to get us in the mindset of being business owners, and they opened our eyes to all that is involved in owning and running your own business,” says Julieta of her first experience with the Florida SBDC at UNF.  “Over the years we’ve worked with many consultants, focusing on a variety of different processes within our business. Initially, we worked with Cheryl Lynch, who has been an immense help in assisting us in many financial and administrative matters. This summer, we began working with Jaime Sanchez, who has been a huge help in showing us how to optimize and improve our website and our social media usage. Our web traffic this summer has grown exponentially thanks to his direction. Additionally, we work with Veronica Bolado and Julia Montgomery on market research, marketing, and sales initiatives. The research they did for us assisted us in getting our products into local grocery stores. The whole team has been fantastic, and Guanabana has really benefited from everyone’s expertise.”

Guanabana was among the region’s many businesses to be negatively impacted by the economic effects of Covid-19, so getting to the Florida SBDC at UNF for assistance with their digital marketing was a crucial step in keeping the business afloat.

“All of the in-person events that Guanabana had scheduled for the summer just started canceling,” says Jaime Sanchez of the Florida SBDC at UNF. “They came to us because they knew that they had to refine their online marketing capabilities to reach customers. We immediately performed an assessment of their website, their social media practices, and we provided a list of priorities and suggestions. We have continued to work with Guanabana on executing these suggestions, and the results have been positive, with organic website traffic growing by about 67% over a 6-month period.”

The assistance that Guanabana has received has been multi-faceted, as the Florida SBDC at UNF has a skilled and diverse bench of consultants. The expertise at the Florida SBDC at UNF now includes Spanish/English bilingual consultants that provide a great deal of value to Northeast Florida’s Spanish-speaking business owners. The combination of talent at the Florida SBDC at UNF allows for a team-based approach to business consulting, providing targeted guidance and the collective experience of a qualified group of professionals.

“Guanabana has been a committed and dynamic client,” says Jaime of his experience working with Oliver and Julieta. “It is always so rewarding to work with a business that is hard-working, flexible, and eager to problem-solve. The Mosqueda’s have been a delight to work with, and I’m looking forward to watching them continue in their success.”
