Success Story

Live Oak Frozen Treats

The SBDC has been a huge asset to me as I journey into the world of small business ownership. Owning my own business has been a long time goal, and the SBDC helped me figure out exactly where to start.

William Bryant came to the FSBDC in 2015 with the idea of opening a frozen yogurt shop in Live Oak. William started gathering information on the industry, checking into possible locations and working on a business plan. With the help of his FSBDC consultant in Live Oak, Mark Yarick, the business plan went through many revisions, and William was able to connect with a shop in Daytona to get some real-world numbers and advice. These numbers were integrated into the business plan, and financial projections were developed. The biggest obstacle William had to overcome was securing funding for the venture. When no lender would approve a loan because he would be giving up his job to start the business and had no other source of income, William continued to press forward. With Mark’s advice and assistance, he revised the plan, adjusted the start-up costs, secured leases for the equipment and a $15,000 line of credit for build-out and working capital, and received family contributions to get the enterprise off the ground. William was committed to the idea from the beginning and did not let anything keep him from implementing his plan. He was very disciplined in setting a start-up budget as part of the plan and was successful at sticking to the plan.

Live Oak Frozen Treats opened its doors in June of 2016 and sales projections have been surpassed already. William also launched a successful Facebook campaign that captured over 1,200 likes in the first week. The entire family is very involved in the business (and William’s four children enjoy the treats!). This is the identifying image they have presented in the community.

Of his assistance from the FSBDC, William says “The SBDC has been a huge asset to me as I journey into the world of small business ownership. Owning my own business has been a long time goal, and the SBDC helped me figure out exactly where to start. FSBDC at UNF consultant in Live Oak, Mark Yarick, spent (and is still spending) countless hours helping me develop a business plan and guiding me through the many roadblocks I hadn’t anticipated. Throughout this process the FSBDC has been extremely available and consistent with their follow up. I am certain I would not be at this point in my business without the aid of the FSBDC.”
