Success Story

Pelindaba Lavender Amelia Island

Jodi Henson with SBDC was instrumental in helping us put together a sound business plan.  And it didn’t stop there, as Jodi continues to follow our journey to ensure we remain successful

Back in 2016, Heather Edge and Pam James were vacationing in the Northwest U.S. Their final destination was Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, located off the coast of Washington state. That visit became a pivotal moment in their lives and their careers. On San Juan Island they discovered the Pelindaba Lavender Farm, and life has not been the same for them since.

The Pelindaba Lavender Farm was created by its owner to preserve and protect land on San Juan Island. The founder planted lavender and soon realized he needed to do something with his wonderful crops. Soon thereafter a distillery was added along with manufacturing facilities to use the certified organic essential oils from the lavender plants, and the Pelindaba product line was born. When Heather and Pam tested the products they knew they wanted to be involved. They spent much of their vacation at the farm learning more about the manufacturing process, quality control, and the product lines. They made the decision to open a Pelindaba Lavender store on Amelia Island, where they knew locals and tourists would love the products as much as they do.

Shortly after returning home from vacation, they contacted the Florida SBDC and met with Jodi Henson to get assistance with opening their store. They were determined to locate the shop in downtown Fernandina Beach and began researching available locations. Jodi assisted them with the creation of their business plan, financing options, forecasting and marketing plans. They found an ideal location that needed renovation and soon they got started on creating the business. While renovations on the lease space were being done, Heather and Pam returned to San Juan Island for extensive product and store training at the Pelindaba Farm. They were required to work in all aspects of a Pelindaba retail store as well as in the manufacturing process of the products. This was critical training so they understand how each product is made, what ingredients are in each product, how the quality control process works, and how to merchandise the product line. All the lavender used in their products comes directly from the farm to create botanical, culinary, personal care, therapeutic, household, and pet care products.

Pelindaba Lavender in Fernandina Beach officially opened its doors on March 9th, and a Grand Opening was held on March 25th. In the eight weeks since opening, it is clear customers love their products. They have been pleasantly surprised with their first two months and are eagerly anticipating tourist season on Amelia Island. Of the assistance received, Pam James says “Jodi Henson with SBDC was instrumental in helping us put together a sound business plan. And it didn’t stop there, as Jodi continues to follow our journey to ensure we remain successful”.

Pelindaba Lavender is located at 15 S. 4th Street in Historic Fernandina Beach. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00am – 7:00pm and Sunday 11:00am – 5:00pm.
